The Shrine is dedicated to helping crippled children walk again
and to correcting the after effects of burns.
As Shriners, we all do our share in this effort, but as SHRINE CLOWNS we go a little further, by doing our best to bring smiles to those who are confined in hospitals and nursing homes across the nation. We are also the most visible public relations unit in the Shrine, and as such we have the responsibility to always be aware of our actions in public. It has been recalled that a statement was made indicating that the clowns are the best paid units in Shrinedom, for if we can make an infirm adult or a disabled child smile, that is the highest pay anyone could ever ask for.
The Clown Prayer
As I stumble through this life help me to create more laughter than tears, dispense more happiness than gloom, spread more cheer than despair. Never let me grow so big that I will fail to see the wonder in the eyes of a child or the twinkle in the eyes of the aged. Never let me forget that "I am a Clown"...that my work is to cheer people up, make them happy, and make them laugh, and make them forget at least momentarily all the unpleasant things in their lives... Never let me jeopoardize the integrity of Clowndom by improper conduct. Help me to always make others proud of my actions as a Clown. Never let me acquire financial success to the point where I will discontinue calling upon My Creator in the hour of plenty. And, in my final moment, may I hear You whisper:
"When you made My people smile, you made Me smile."
