Unit Info
Currently, there are thirty-one (31) Active clowns and forty five (45) Emeritus clowns. Of the active clowns, all are regular members except for three who are a first-year or Apprentice Clowns. All of our Active members are members of the International Shrine Clown Associations (ISCA) and the Northeast Shrine Clown Association (NESCA).
In the early days of Anah Shrine Clowning, anyone desirous of obtaining membership in the Second Section was first asked to serve as a clown before gaining membership in the Second Section. This occurred on or around 1961. The first six Clowns were Norman Hatch, Bob Mott, Bob McClure, David Perry, David Cahoon and Ken Day. From that time on and up until 1973, all applicants for the second section were placed on a waiting list and expected to apprentice as Clowns for a one year period. In 1973 Anah's Clown unit was formed with Director Bob Winchell, Captain Norman Hatch, Secretary-Treasurer Keith Patterson, and members George Sneddin, Harold Judkins, Ronald Pomeroy, Clyde Dority, John Chase, and Floyd Bragg. Norman Hatch was the first President of NESCA from Anah. He was followed by George Sneddin and Ken Wood.
The unit got into catering through the efforts of Guy Chapman and Ken Wood. Ken used to assist Guy Chapman in putting on the Bangor-Brewer dinners. When Ken became a Clown, the unit started providing catering services to the other units.
Don Young brought the Aviator's degree to the unit. Ken Wood brought the Herring Choker's degree and, Ron Miller and "Bunky" from Palestine Temple brought the Wood Choppers degree.
Clown College was started by Frank "Pinky" Yetner and NESCI was founded in 1990 with George Sneddin and Ken Wood on the founding Board .
In our Active membership we have six (6) Master Clowns, Mike Samiya, Donald Young, Charlie Grindle, Dave Denis, Reggie Eugley and Phil Millett and three (3) Crafstman clowns, Maynard Ballard, Dana Crockett, and Howard Samiya.
There is a proud and long competitive tradition associated with the Anah Clowns. We are very active in the Northeast Shrine Association and in the Northeast Clown Institute a/k/a Clown College. For many years Anah Clowns have prided themselves as "the Clowns to beat" in various competitions where our guys always win awards. It is rare for us not to walk away from a competition with less than three clowns in the top ten of an event; many times we are in the top three!
Currently, we have openings for Apprentice Clowns and, we are soliciting for membership. If you know of anyone interested in joining the Clowns, have that person contact Boss Clown, Kerry "Spiffy" Spofford.
Thanks, Ken "Driftwood" Wood for helping with the history of the unit.
